Ginsenoside is the main component of ginseng (Panaxginseng). The root of ginseng contains about 4% of total saponins, and the content in fibrous roots is higher than that in tap roots. From this point of view, the quality of ginsenosides in white ginseng, American ginseng, and Korean ginseng is the best, and the rest of the ginseng is next or has no ginsenoside activity. Ginsenosides can be extracted from the roots, stems, flowers, leaves and other secondary parts of ginseng.
Ginsenosides are white or light yellow amorphous powders, generally contain 2 to 4 sugar groups, soluble in methanol, ethanol and hot acetone, and have optical rotation.
The "Announcement on the Catalog of Names of Cosmetic Raw Materials Used" issued by the State Food and Drug Administration in 2014, CTFA and the "Chinese Name Catalog of International Cosmetic Raw Materials Standards" published by the China Fragrance Association in 2010 all use ginsenosides as cosmetic raw materials. It has been reported to be unsafe for topical use.
